Eastern Hognose Snake. When I first approached the snake laid motionless. I used a small broken tree limb to try to gently move it for a better photograph. That's when it puffed up the size of it's head area (nearly double original size) and started exhaling with a loud hiss. It never would play dead as some hognose snakes are prone to do. It also would not strike or bite. Finally it moved away to the brush close to the large pond.
