on happiness

Happiness is

an elusive fiend, a bird

that comes to rest in

your chest, then turns itself

into a heart and starts

to thump wildly against

a birdcage of bones.

And each breath in

stirs a wind that flutters

wings. And each breath out

sings a song, one you've known

all along, one that trills

and swoops and lifts

itself into the sun.

I've been undone

by happiness,

my lungs have billowed

like the bellows

that they are.

And to be absurd,

flocks of birds have migrated

in me, south to north,

back and forth,

mapping out my life

in moments that are measured

by their song.

Poem by me. It's still a bit rough, but I like the concept. Image taken along The Dalles Mountain Road in Oregon with a Hasselblad 500 C/M.
