the cool blue of winter
April is the cruellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.
Winter kept us warm, covering
Earth in forgetful snow...
This image was taken only about a week before the previous image (of the mustard field). Such strange Oregon weather! I had to work at our Vernonia clinic that day, and the drive up the Scappoose-Vernonia Highway was a gorgeous one. At first it hailed, and then snowed, and then snowed furiously, and then the sun came out. It was so beautiful that the tech and I took five minutes to pull off to the side of the road at this spot and snap pictures.
I had my Nikon FM loaded with Fuji Velvia 50, which resulted in a very strong blue cast. I've reduced that cast a bit to reflect the more accurate cool blues of the scene as I saw it.
Verse from T.S. Eliot's "The Waste Land".
