Mussels Spaghetti in a White Wine and Basil Oil Broth

Critique for SLW: Share and Share Alike.

I chose this photo because Italian food is the essence of sharing to me. Maybe I should have used my very large family platter because I had some more pasta and mussels that couldn't fit here. Circle=feeds up to 4, oval=feeds 8. Only makes a little sense, but oval platters communicate something different in a shot.

I love the color explosion I was able to get from literally 5 ingredients. It looks very high-key. I have to say mussels are very photogenic besides being ugly on the inside, like some supermodels. Heh. I also love the plating of the dish; it wasn't how Jamie Oliver's food stylist did it so I'm quite proud of it.

It's hard to get an accurate sense of scale here. If you're used to New Zealand or imported mussels and giant lemons, the spaghetti looks extremely bloated. This dish is shallowly swimming in a light broth. I don't think that was shown well. Does it make the pasta look dry that way? I don't like the way the broth splashed on to some of the basil leaves. I love the fresh appearance of matte leaves.

Maybe the shot could have benefitted from a shallower DOF, but I'd hate to lose focus on some of the mussels and bring attention to the uglier but more obvious details.
