Albert Square - the plans
Albert Square and the external public spaces form an essential component of the Town Hall complex and will make a
key contribution to the project objectives regarding improvements to the setting of the building and other important
historic buildings and features, its functionality, the commercial aspirations, heritage and accessibility.

The project team’s approach has been to look at what people love about Albert Square and to understand how it is
currently used by the people of Manchester. We have also considered what doesn’t work about the square, and have tackled the challenges that need to be addressed with the new proposals. As part of this process we’ve also looked back at the history of how the square has evolved over the years, starting with the fact that the Albert Memorial was built before the Town Hall itself.
