Case Study No. 1: Shaken, Not Stirred (2012)
Built by Pacassa Studios, a local woodworking and architecture firm, the display cases at the very center of the new Magnes building will be used to highlight thematic selections from the permanent collection. Every year the curators of The Magnes will collaborate with UC Berkeley faculty, graduate students, and visiting scholars in creating Case Studies from the collection.

For Case Study I, The Magnes staff took pleasure in discovering and re-encountering art and artifacts that were packed away in storage during the construction and collection move. For the first time, The Magnes is able to store and make accessible nearly three-quarters of its collection on-site, making new connections and interpretations possible.
