      There are hills and sand dunes (in the left corner). Between them rivers producing the so-called "alluvial fans". The water carries sand and sediments with it transporting it off the hills. The water carves its way through this new material. Depending on the water flow volume several of these new courses may be filled with water at the same time, but usually only one is filled. You see that the water does not even reach the foot of these fans but disappears in the soil already before the base line of the fans.
