The centre part of a tanka, Buddhist painting, from Wutun Si in Qinghai province, China, in the process of completion. We visited the artists during their work at the monastery itself and in the surrounding villages, the most famous place in the country for tanka paintings. Depending on the size and the pattern it might take up to six months to complete a tanka, but usually two to three months. The artists began their training at the age of ten under the guidance of masters. Talked to one artist who has been painting for 26 years and he said each tanka is unique and the learning process goes on for life.

They paint twelve hours aday , five days a week.
