"Under bare Ben Bulben's Head..."

This is the head of Ben Bulben or Benbulbin. A famous 'table mountain', near Sligo town. The poet and Nobel prize winner William Butler YeatsYeats lies buried in its shadow. His epitaph, which is the final line from one of his last poems, 'Under Ben Bulben' is "Cast a cold Eye On life, on death; Horseman, pass by!".

The title for this photo is taken from that poem.

Of this location, Yeats said, "the place that has really influenced my life most is Sligo."
