Power functions wrecker truck chassis WIP
For about a year now I've been thinking about building a wrecker truck as used by the company "Johan van der Zand", an internationally operating vehicle recover service home-based in the Netherlands.
Whilst looking for a reference picture this morning I found an interesting news item, while I was pondering building one, somebody has already beaten me to it (and it's not bad either)!
Anyway, one of the reasons why it took me so long is because I wanted mine to have power functions remote control for the steering and drive. I've done this before, for my FDNY fire truck, but I didn't have the parts for a second system until a few weeks ago and this chassis has a few difficulties: the front and middle axle have steering. This means I need a connection between them. However, the XL motor for the drive will have to go somewhere and the drive shaft will have to somehow get past the middle steering axle. The middle steering axle can also be lifted off the ground. All in all this was a big 3D puzzle which I've now managed to solve. I've taken it for a few test-drives (obviously with a battery box and IR receiver fitted to it) and so far, with the weight fairly low, it works like a charm.
Before all the technical gubbins are covered by the truck's body, I decided to take this WIP picture.
