The Wayward Brothers Return
During the recent extreme cold weather snap, the Danbo Brothers mysteriously vanished for days after I sent them off on an emergency mission to replenish my chocolate supply. Some believed I would never see them again. But, just as I always knew they would, the Danbo Brothers have returned.
They came back happy and loaded down with brightly coloured beach umbrellas. Little Danbo smelled faintly of coconut oil, pineapple and plumeria blossoms. Big Danbo sported raccoon eyes and a rather fresh-looking radioactive sunburn, apparently having underestimated the strength of the tropical sun (unlike Little Danbo, who was wise enough to slather on a total sunblock). They did manage to bring me a decent amount of chocolate, although all of it contained macadamia nuts. They gave me my change from the chocolate purchase. I decided not to say a word - who can blame them? It's what we all wished we could do during that cold snap.
When I first started perusing Flickr, I'd occasionally come across images of these box-headed characters. I had no idea who they were and why people were taking photos of them. It took me a while to figure it all out. So, for those of you new to the Danbos (or Danboards, as they are technically called), they are toy figures from Japan made to resemble Amazon boxes. The character originates from a Japanese comic magazine (or manga) called Yotsuba&!. The Danbo figures have articulated arms, legs and head, so they can be moved into different positions. For some reason, they have become somewhat popular as subjects of photography on Flickr. That's where I first saw them and fell in love with them. They make me smile! :)
