Our Little Friends #5: Red-Breasted Nuthatch
New Year's Day, 2012, dawned crisp and sunny, the sky a deep, clear blue. The air was quite nippy if you weren't dressed for it (wind-chill of -18 C), so we bundled up to take our New Year's Day walk in the park and filled our pockets with a few peanuts to offer our squirrel friends.
There is a lovely conifer grove we always walk by. We love that grove as it's always filled with chickadees and nuthatches and squirrels. We sat on the ground in the middle of the grove, leaning up against a large tree trunk, and the squirrels started to appear from every tree around. Much to our delight, as my partner held out a peanut-in-the-shell for a squirrel, a chickadee alighted upon the top of the peanut and took a few pecks! We quickly broke open a few peanuts and held out our open hands and waited. Sure enough, the chickadees and nuthatches began to come and eat right from our hands! Neither of us have ever experienced that before. My partner and I took turns feeding the birds and taking photos. It was pure joy!
