Gov. Scott Walker exempted police and firefighters unions (for the time being?) from provisions of his budget repair bill that would take away most collective bargaining rights from public employees. One of the most moving parts of today's protest rally at the Capitol Square was the large number of firefighters from Madison and elsewhere -- not directly affected by the proposed legislation -- who showed up to support their union brothers and sisters. The Dept. of Administration estimated that 10,000 people -- many busing in from cities and towns all over the state -- were outside the Capitol today, with another 3,000 inside, where the Joint Finance Committee was holding hearings on the bill. The rally was a powerful expression of opposition to Walker's high-handed, dictatorial approach to collective bargaining.
