Landing Craft captain
Of all the pictures I've taken in Normandy this year this is the one I am most taken by despite its artistic and technical shortcomings.
Normandy in the days around 6 June is flooded with olive drab - vehicles and uniforms abound. The anniversary of D-Day takes on the air of a festival with chattering would-be soldiers visitng historic sites and museums and crowding the streets of the coastal towns.
There is a small number of elderly men however who comport themselves with quiet dignity, sitting and watching, perhaps not seeing the present day gaudy shops and cafes but the town, themselves and their comrades as they were 63 years ago.
