17th September 2012 - Prinsjesdag Preparation - Training the horses
Turn up your volume.
18th September is Prinsjesdag in The Hague, Netherlands - when the Queen opens parliament and reads the budget speech. She rides to parliament in a golden coach and is accompanied by her troops (more on this soon!)
In preparation for this, the horses involved (some lent for the occasion by private individuals, I understand) are taken through their paces in front of the crowds who gather to watch. As they march round, they are subjected to the noise of the band, interspersed with loud noises, bangs and rattles and smoke bombs are let off at intervals which the horses have to ride through. The event culminates with a charge along the beach followed by a march back.
These are my photos of the event .... I was quite a distance away for much of it as it was so busy and, because of this, was very grateful for the zoom on the SX40. To give the impression of the event in the 90 seconds allowed by flickr these are set at one second each. I hope flickr hasn't compressed this too much as it is perfectly watchable on my laptop.
