A tramway opened in Shenyang during 1907, worked by animal traction (horse). The company used second-hand rolling stock, built in the U.S. (!) in 1886 for Tōkyō, and made surplus by tramway electrification in 1903. This system was closed in 1922.
The second tramway, worked by electric traction, was opened on 1925 October 12. The last line(s) were closed in 1974.
The Shenyang trolleybus system was opened on 1951 November 1. It was closed on 1999 June 20.
Construction of the first line of the Shenyang Metro was started in 2005. The line was opened on 2010 September 27. There are now two lines with a total system length of 55.2 km. Expansion plans outline a system of 11 lines, with a total system length of about 400 km, by 2020.
