Hunkered Down

Whitetail Buck In Velvet - Big Meadows, Shenandoah National Park, Virginia.

A familiar typical 8-point Buck hunkered down in the lush, tall green grass of a particular area in the meadow. A lot of the Bucks are starting to come around now. They always 'disappear' for a few months and keep a low profile after they lose their antlers in late Winter each year.

Most of them are looking real healthy this year with above average body weight and sporting some good looking antlers. If my calculations are correct, there are about 6-7 more weeks of antler growth remaining before the hardening process begins. I'm thinking the shedding process will be a bit earlier than usual this year.
