Whitetail Doe & Fawn - Big Meadows, Shenandoah National Park, VA

Met up with another one of my Flickr pals at 4:45am this morning (John Messner) in hopes of some more photo opportunities with new Fawns. It was windy and somewhat foggy at the start, not to mention very wet grass. We singled out one Doe which was sporting a 'milk bag' and watched her mill around, bed down and come and go throughout the meadow - for several hours. She was very clever at disguising the fact that she had a Fawn, as most Does are. However, John had to leave at 9am in order to get to work at 10am. About 40 minutes later, she went and got her Fawn up and nursed it. What a pisser for John!

Shortly after feeding, the Doe laid down and gave the Fawn a tongue bath. It returned the favor by licking on her ears.

These 'reunions' will occur for the first few weeks of a Fawn's life as the mother nurses it, cleans it and beds it down several times a day. When the Fawn's legs are strong and can run fast, she will then let it stay with her constantly.
