Rewind to April 2011....a lethargic female Black Bear (Sow) with her tiny cub carefully placed beneath her chest. Taken shortly after their emergence from Winter denning (video). Bears are hard to find in the mountains in early Spring when they first emerge from their dens - they are lethargic and food is scarce. They do not travel much and will stay in one confined area until both of these conditions change. At first they will 'hang out' in trees for several days until they shake the lethargy.

3 brackets from a single RAW (-2 | 0 | +2) merged and lightly tone mapped, slight crop.

Some of you may remember that last year I was contracted by a UK film company (Wild Horizons) who are working with the Discovery Channel to produce an upcoming series titled WILD PLANET: NORTH AMERICA . They contracted me to help them locate wildlife, emerging Black Bears in particular. They came to Shenandoah National Park twice during the Spring last year and I was able to help them locate this Bear and her Cub, which they managed to get some spectacular footage of (more info here). They also got some footage of newborn twin whitetail fawns, coyotes, wild turkeys and Spring scenery from some of the overlook vistas. This sow and her cub will be seen by millions of people when the series airs.

Quite a few people have been asking me when the series is going to be aired. It was supposed to air this year but it has now been pushed out to 2013.
