Yesterday around 3:10pm it was negative low tide, about just over 1 foot! Of course I couldn't say no to checking out the tide pools.
It was also a perfect break from writing my thesis to get out of the house for some fresh air, sun, and exploring. My roommate and I headed out to Sunset Cliffs area to see if we could find any cool organisms in the tide pools. We didn't find too much, just a few fish here and there. Lots of hermit crabs and sea anemone. I was more amazed at how far you could walk out. Usually the ocean is hitting up against the cliff sides. Here you can see how far you have to go to reach the shoreline.
Of course, this doesn't stop surfers from hitting the waves. There were several surfers making their way out to the ocean. But the water was freezing! I saw that they were well equipped: thick wetsuit, boots, and gloves. I was cold just watching them go out. >_<
We also stayed for the sunset. It was a gorgeous sunset too. I also realized, since coming back down to San Diego for Spring semester, I hadn't gone back to the beach yet. I'm glad I did. I miss the ocean sound and smell.
Cabrillo tide pools are definitely on my list to do while down here in San Diego. Maybe the next time.
