the building under construction (top left) will become a dormitory for the school of visual arts (SVA). the building is a throwback to 1960's architecture--particularly soviet socialist architecture--that adorned many ugly assed buildings, and housing projects of that era. when you look at it, the building looks more like a hospital of ill repute, or some kind of prison, such as the federal detention center on park row currently holding several international terrorist suspects.
the building (top right) is "blue" condo. it is a modern glass building surrounded by low-rise tenements and squalor. it sort of looks like an star wars at-st.
the third building (bottom left ) is the hotel on rivington.
under a rezoning plan several years now in the planning stage,
...and to be voted on by the city council later this year, about 114 blocks, from 13th st to delancey st may be rezoned. community board 3, and the department of city planning is seeking to do away with monstrosities such as these two buildings that look and feel waaaay out of place with the entire neighborhood.
"In recent years an increasing number of new buildings have been constructed at heights significantly above most existing buildings in the East Village and Lower East Side. It is this mismatch between what is permitted under the existing zoning and the predominant neighborhood character that this proposal seeks to remedy."
cb3 voted to approve the measure on may 28, 2008, now it's up to the city council to vote, and then to the mayor to veto or sign.
