2011-08-10 - Lunar Occultation ... and plane transit.

This short 10s clip shows the 92% illuminated Moon occulting the 2.9 magnitude star Albaldah (Pi Sgr). Shortly after the star blinks out, an air plane flew across the frame.

I shot this with my Nikon D90 attached to my 6" Orion Astroview 6 EQ with a 2x teleconverter in between. Focal length was about 1500mm. I had the camera off axis from the Moon and then hit the exposure lock so the star would stay visible even when the moon took up a large part of the frame and was over exposed. If I let the camera expose for the Moon the star would not be visible. The hazy blue cloud on the left-middle of the frame is lens flare from the Moon, most likely caused by the teleconverter.
