i'm wondering. is that mig- or tig-brazing on the main frame tubes?

This is British design and workmanship at it's best in a robot manufacturing world.

@flobukki: Bromptons are mild steel and are brazed. The gold colour is the brass filler metal.

i know it's brazed. the main joint just doesn't look like it was brazed by hand/torch.

btw: mild steel? are you sure?
  • beqi 4y

It is, according to Brompton's educational lesson plans for materials. The original bikes were made of softer steel because the main frame tube had to be bent by human power instead of in a press. I don't know what percentage of carbon is in the steel Brompton currently uses, but 'mild' is normally up to 0.3%.

    Fascinating : )
I am not versed on Brompton's manufacturing process, but should really look into it in depth.

BTW I have a post about this bicycle here, and there are some additional details from readers in the comments.
