There was a time, as recently as the 1980s, when storefronts, banners, and even street signs were all hand-lettered with brush and paint. Even Vancouver has a rich history of ghost signs throughout the city and with hand-lettered windows such as those at Rainier Provisions, Old Faithful Shop, and Harvest Community Foods to name a few.

Like many skilled trades, the sign industry has been overrun by techno-fueled promise of quicker and cheaper. The art of the hand painted sign has been replaced with the homogenous three-colour banner and LED screen. Sign Painters, the first anecdotal history of the craft, features the stories of more than 2 dozen sign painters in North America (primarily in the US) including Vancouver based sign painter, John Lennig.
