Scientist checks tapes for uniformity
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) scientist Yates Coulter checks the quality and uniformity of long tapes for a number of companies. His cassettelike machine passes each tape, inch by inch, through two external magnetic fields, the first in the plane of the tape and the second vertical to it, automatically measuring current flow through each segment. This is the first machine to differentiate changes in uniformity from changes in microstructure as causes of reduced current flow.
