A scientist performs Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry
Toti Larson measures carbon isotope ratios on organic solvents at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Gas chromatography is used to separate and purify specific organic compounds that are then analyzed for carbon-12 and carbon-13 abundances using an isotope ratio mass spectrometer (IRMS). These data are used to understand the reaction history of organic molecules.
