Leicester 22nd September 2012

Trench 1 uncovered the eastern wall and cloister walk of the friary. Trench 2 on the right was where the body, thought to be that of Richard III, was found. I found it surprising how shallow the trenches were.

Over the summer the University of Leicester, with the Council & Richard III Society, have been excavating the area around the medieval church of Greyfriars in an attempt to locate the remains of Richard III which were thought to be buried here. The friary was destroyed at the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the mid-16th century and building in the 18th & 19th centuries has concealed its location.
