Heaton Mersey Stockport Cheshire 4th May 1968
Amazingly after 44 years I have just found a steam era negative I didn't know I had. This shows how poor my filing system is although the negative was so thin maybe I just didn't see it before. It took quite a bit of cleaning up.
It was taken on the last day of steam at the ex-Cheshire Lines Committee Heaton Mersey depot on the footplate of LMS Stanier Black 5 4-6-0 45282. It's not obvious but she was in steam & the driver had invited us into the cab. The young boy is 5-6 years old so today will be a man of 50, presumably with fond memories of the end of steam.
The driver's sliding side window is so filthy that it is impossible to see through but fortunately the open window has let in just about enough light to capture the scene.
45282 was built by Armstrong Whitworth in 1936 and withdrawn officially from Edge Hill in May 1968 but was seen dumped at Heaton Mersey on 21st June 1968. It was cut up by Draper's of Hull in October 1968.
