NRM York 3rd February 2012
The National Railway Museum is normally a home for stuffed & mounted steam engines but it comes alive when mainline railtour engines are stabled in the South Yard. Stanier Black 5 4-6-0 45305 was being prepared for a positioning move from York to Carnforth prior to working the Cumbrian Mountain Express the following day.
The Fitness-to-run (FTR) test had still to be carried out and included making sure the safety valves lifted on the red line. Hence the impressive exhaust as the fire was banked up to raise boiler pressure.
