Coldeaton Cutting Derbyshire 22nd January 2012

There are some tremendous cuttings through the Lower Carboniferous Limestone on this stretch of the former LNWR Buxton-Ashbourne line. These through the High Peak from Parsley Hay to Hartington were clearly built for double track but only carried a single line. Beyond the cutting the line joined the original Cromford & High Peak Railway which ran in from the east just south of Parsley Hay station.

The line was opened in 1899 and closed to regular passenger traffic in 1953 although regular excursions were run through to Hartington and freight southward to Ashbourne until 1963. When I walked this stretch in 1968 the rails were still in place to Hartington although by that time disused having closed in 1967.
