Athenry Galway Ireland 23rd June 2010

On a grey day we decided to take the train from Athenry into Galway City rather than fight with the road traffic. We hadn't just missed a train - this was the passenger train to Ennis & Limerick via the reinstated West of Ireland line. The junction is just ahead of the train and a few moments later it took the left hand track southwards. The line straight ahead is the former Midland Great Western Railway (MGWR) main line from Dublin to Galway City dating from 1851.

The southern section of the Western Rail Corridor to Limerick opened in 1869 & in 1901 became part of the Great Southern and Western Railway (GS&WR). It closed to passengers in 1976 & freight in the 1980s.

I think the signal box only controls the level crossing now, the two multiple aspect colour lights being controlled from Galway. Those red & white "Limited Clearance" checkerboards are very big compared to the equivalents in the UK.
