Birmingham University station 1st June 1978

Leaning into the curve through Birmingham University station Peak diesel 46028 powers up the gradient south out of Birmingham with an evening NE-SW express in the rain.

We were living in New Orleans now & this was our first vacation back home. While still in the US I had bought a British Railways all-line Rail Rover so all our travelling during the 3 weeks holiday was done by rail. After 10 months of non-UK railways I had to catch up on the local developments. These included a trip from London to Inverness, Kyle of Lockalsh, Mallaig, Glasgow, Edinburgh & back to Kings Cross. I had become an American Tourist!!

University station had opened fully since my last visit to Birmingham & was served by dmus to Redditch & Longbridge. Later the line was electrified as part of the Cross-city line from Lichfield.
