Sheffield Victoria Yorkshire September 1969
Sheffield Victoria station forecourt with a splendid collection of 1960s vintage cars every one built in the UK. Two Rover 2000s (one 1965) when Rovers were still synonymous with quality, a 1968 Ford Escort, a 1965 Mark 1 Cortina, Austin Cambridge, Morris 1000, a Mini, an Austin A110 Westminster Mark II & behind the taxi a Morris 1000 van. Wait, I think I see the nose of a foreign interloper beyond the Wolseley - a VW Beetle.
The awnings on platform 1 can be seen to the left of the clock tower. The entrance to the station is behind the taxi and access to the platforms was via a wide subway and steps up. I used to leave for Aberystwyth from here, first to Manchester Picadilly over Woodhead, change for Crewe & then change for Shrewsbury where I would finally change for the Cambrian Line. A long days journey but at 18/19 years old it proved to be the catalyst for my life-long interest in railways
The building to the left is the once railway owned Royal Victoria Hotel. Since complete demolition of the station buildings the hotel has expanded to cover the whole site.
