Great Central Railway Birstall 18th October 2008

Great Central Railway O4 2-8-0 63601 approaches the foot crossing at Birstall. The fireman is quite correctly keeping a close look-out. It's the Wizards Weekend hence the headboard! Warthogs, Hogwarts, whatever.

The foot crossing is one of only two on the entire length of the GCR London Extension. I have seen DVD footage of the Woodford Runners charging through here in the 1960s when it was still double tracked. Very impressive.

When 63601 was shedded at Frodingham in Scunthorpe in the late 50s/early 60s I may well have had a similar view of it pulling coal trains at Kirton Lane crossing in Thorne but since my Eastern Region ABCs were lost many years ago I have no proof.
