shot with a homemade mask on the lens . the mask made the image slightly less sharp than the unmasked image, however, I was able to take images when the clouds were less thick (note the four sunspots center left ...) As I didn't have a solar filter or welding glass, I needed to reduce the light entering the lens as much as possible. First, I stopped down the 180mm f 2.8 lens to f 32. I also had a 1.5 teleconverter attached. Still way too bright, unless the sun was covered by heavy clouds, I quickly made a mask out of aluminum foil to reduce the light even further. This enabled me to capture images when the sun was obscured by light clouds, but the sun with no clouds was still too bright.
