Fire closes Channel Tunnel! Eurostar trains stranded @ St Pancras London
Six Eurostar trains stand idle at London's St Pancras station today. About 500 people are stranded after a fire on the French side of the tunnel set of smoke alarms and closed the tunnel. Some passengers returning from France to England were evacuated off the train inside the tunnel and given gas masks.they were taken to an airtight concrete room within the tunnel where they had to wait for two hours before being returned to Calais in France.
A fire in a truck that was being transported through the Channel Tunnel triggered an alarm which led to suspension of all passenger and freight rail services between Britain and France on Saturday, police said. No injuries were reported.
Railway operator Eurostar suspended all services for Saturday and said trains were returning to their original stations.
Kent Police said the fire was at the French end of the tunnel.
