What's the range up to these days? I've read there are still problems with diffusion through the atmosphere.

We are not able to provide any information on range for security reasons. Regarding compensation for atmospheric turbulence, the Airborne Laser (ABL) Beam Control/Fire Control system in 2007 flight tests successfully directed the beam generated by a surrogate High Energy Laser at a missile-shaped target on the side of a USAF Big Crow aircraft -- verifying ability to maintain beam focus while continuously tracking a target. The system located and tracked the target, determined range to the target and then compensated for atmospheric turbulence.

Are these compensations done in a manner similar to the mirrors on the large array telescopes?
