Goldfields Baby

A 1/4 plate ambrotype from the estate of a Ballarat, Victoria, family. This image is housed in a thermoplastic case. Photographers on the Victorian goldfields advertised and produced many daguerreotypes and ambrotypes, but very few have survived through to the present day - perhaps this ambro came with this child's family from further afield, maybe Britain or California. But this photo, and the two others from the same estate (which I will be posting here soon), together show an odd mixture of British and American influences which, I think, suggest a local origin.
