Eastern Box Turtle peeking out

Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina)

i found this guy wandering in the middle of the road

and dropped him off in a safe place with high grasses.

you have to respect a creature that carries its house on its back -

a lesson we could all learn from . . . wherever you go - there you are.

FUN FACTS:

+ Eastern Box Turtles will stay in the same area, as long as they have everything they need (food, water, other turtles to mate with).

+ Eastern Box Turtles hibernate in the winter, usually under dead leaves or inside old stumps.

+ Females usually dig their nests on stormy evenings.

+ Box turtles are some of the only turtles which can completely close their shell, protecting them from predators.

+ Turtle populations are in danger in other states (including Maryland)

because of pesticides and people taking them out of the wild for pets.
