Hurricane Sandy in Lower Manhattan, October 2012
My husband and I live right beside the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel (Hugh L. Carey Tunnel), just south of the World Trade Center. We chose not to evacuate for the hurricane and stayed in our apartment for three days, until the lack of running water drove us to take refuge in Brooklyn. We returned a couple days later, once our power and cold water were restored; hot water would come back after 16 days, heat after 20. As of more than two months after the storm, our elevators and phone lines are still wonky. We were the lucky ones.
