Exploring Viðey

Exploring Viðey island, west Iceland.

Viðey is the largest island (1.7 km²) of the Kollafjörður Bay in Iceland, near the capital Reykjavík. The island is a place of rough nature and wildlife represented by the great number of seabirds.

A short isthmuss divides the island in two parts. The western part is called West Island. The larger part, with the church and the Videyjarstofa Restaurant, is called Home Island and the southeastern part of it is called East Island.

About two million years ago the central volcano of Videy was active and a vast caldera had been created. When the volcanic activity ceased, the wind, water and glacier erosion set in and continued until the undulating, hilly landscape as we see it nowadays was shaped.
