The Book Thief: Markus Zusak

Of the ten books I have read since January this is by far my favorite! The Book Thief is set in Nazi Germany and centers around a young foster girl, Leisel, and her foster family.

The story is narrated by an unsuspecting character - Death. The perspective of Death on the story line is far from grim. In fact the story telling is touching most often, explaining happenings and events in terms of colors and sounds.

The Meminger family takes in Leisel and despite their very meager existence in Molching, Germany they live a rich life filled with love and selflessness (although not the Beaver Cleaver version). They house a young jewish man in their basement despite the risk and the character interaction between Max and Leisel compels you till the very end. By the end of the book I had tears going down my cheeks! When a book moves you like this one did me, it has to be good.

My recommendation on this book is a most definite "must read".
