I have to say, southern Germany pleasantly surprised me. Much more romantic than Spain, at least at this time of year, when everything in Germany is green and crisp fall weather and everything in Spain is brown fields and foreboding rain.
This is the Neuschwanstein Castle in the Bavarian Alps, and it is achingly beautiful. King Ludwig II commissioned the castle to be built as his own personal retreat, and the man could not have had better taste.
I took this photo after already visiting the inside of the castle (where, sadly, no photos were permitted). There was the option of taking a ten minute walk up a small hill to the bridge where this view could be seen. It was definitely worth it.
