Tribute To Our Heroes 405: So Long!
“So long!” He said as he turned away from his friends.
Heading home was a blessing and a curse.
He didn’t want to leave them, but he didn’t want to stay.
He was ready to go, hating himself for being ready.
But his buddies didn’t hate him for it. No, they understood both sides.
Some had gone and returned; leaving too hard, feeling too much like abandoning their post.
Some had left in air evacs: or body bags, without the chance to feel one way or the other.
He got the blessing of feeling guilty and happy at the same time.
He ducked under the rotors, holding onto his helmet, mounted the step, sat down.
Again he looked at the friends he was leaving behind.
He patted his pocket with the hand-written notes he had promised to deliver to the families close to his home town.
He gave a thumbs up and a smile as the helicopter rose to eternity.
His friends had a short memorial, knowing he’d want it that way.
