Bus (formerly) on fire

According to a witness, flames had been shooting out of the exhaust. There was certainly smoke, while the bus was still on, and the engine had been making a strange sound, a bit like a two-stroke engine. Everything was apparently ok, from a fire perspective. I'm guessing it was just a case of a spark plug being dead or something?? I don't know enough about engines, but I'm somehow imagining un-spent fuel coming out the exhaust system some way. SFFD showed up quickly, and left almost as quickly. But not before checking out the engine. (And yes, they did a temperature check before opening that door... Kinda cool to see that technique I remember having been taught to do in a house fire, being used here.) (I'm rambling.)
