Coleton Fishacre Gardens, Kingswear, Devon

The gardens at Coleton Fishacre, covering some 25 acres, are set in a sheltered stream-fed valley, and are luxuriant in all seasons. Designed by Oswald Milne, a pupil of Edward Lutyens, who also designed the house they were commissioned by *Rupert and Lady Dorothy D'Oyly Carte after they bought the estate in 1924.

The Property now belongs to the National Trust.

*Rupert D'Oyly Carte (b.1876–d.1948) was an English hotelier, theatre owner and impresario, best known as proprietor of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company and Savoy Hotel from 1913 to 1948. It is said that P. G. Wodehouse based the character Psmith on a Wykehamist schoolboy whom he identified as Rupert D'Oyly Carte, although it may have been based on Rupert's elder brother, Lucas.
