Super Moon vs Super Sun Halo

    Newer Older

The May 5 "super moon" was followed today by an impressive double sun halo over Dallas, TX USA. The first shot was with a Nikon D7000, the second with my iPhone (and a sunglasses filter!)

Coincidence????? (Probably.) But the same layer of upper-level clouds responsible for the hazy glow around last night's full Moon is probably what's also creating the two rainbow-colored halos around the Sun today. (The bottom one is what's called a "circumhorizontal arc".)

Wow, I've yet to see a double halo! Nice find. : )

I saw this pic in your stream, and after clicking I discovered that I had already commented on it! Feels very strange, as I have in the 15 months that apparently passed seen at least one wonderful double halo, including double parhelion. Still haven't seen a circumhorizontal arc though, so there's always a reason to come back to this pic a third time.
