M87 Supermassive Black Hole

Today, April 10 2019, scientists shared the best observation ever proving the existence of an event horizon surrounding a black hole, 6.5 billion times the mass of our Sun located about 54 million light-years away at the center of galaxy M87. This image from the Event Horizon Telescope #EHT project shows a bright ring formed as light bends the intense gravity around a supermassive black hole. The actual event horizon is about 40 billion km across and is well inside the circular shadow. This observation was only possible because of the collaboration of scientists and telescopes located in 20 countries, literally using our entire rotating planet as a light-collection instrument to gather this data.
