Mr. Blue Skies ~ Patrick

Shooting people on the street's a really interesting endeavor.

When you get so close to strangers with that camera inevitably you end up meeting so many people...

making so many friends...

and engaging in so many great conversations.

Shooting Sunday in Chicago with three other photographers we met Patrick and his father.

They're from Detroit.

They were shooting reflection shots of The Bean with a camera on a tripod.

All of us ended up in a circle talking photography and the talk ended with an invitation to shoot some incredible urban decay locations in Detroit.

You know I'm not too hip on pointing my camera at a scene without a person in it...

urban decay shots... shots of anything dissolving from 'lack of love' make me a little sad inside...

I've seen some amazing pictures of formerly beautiful structures fallen into decay with time and disuse and although the photographs can be beautiful I'm left feeling bummed that that kinda stuff happens.

When I heard that those sites house a good number of the homeless my ears perked up...

my mind drifted towards the human element and I wondered if I could do some closeup work there.

It'd be a daytrip for a group of us so it'd be hard to establish 'relationships' with the people I'd be shooting...

and I'd be outside of my 'comfort zone'...

but getting close to those people and capturing images of their struggle to live in a structure that was built in such an opulent era is pretty compelling to me.

I hadn't thought of that before we all started talking by The Bean.

Before I met Patrick and his father.

Walking away from that conversation I was left feeling so lucky at how many friends this camera's made me and how many doors it has opened.

It's taken me places I'd never imagined I would go.

It's let me share some amazing images of that journey with so many people.

You've been on that journey with me from the beginning.
