Redondo Beach Jesus Man with Van

    Newer Older

I got lucky and got this shot of the Riviera Village Jesus Van and the Jesus Man at the same time. I love how his message is just "Jesus". His "Jesus" hat is awesome - like he's some sort of official Jesus promoter.

He's always parked in the same spot, and seems to spend all day wandering about putting up signs that just say "Jesus" on them. I presume he's living in the van.

Chevy Art, RedondoBeachCA, and 5 other people added this photo to their favorites.

i did a 10 minute interview with him in highschool for my history class.the topic was the role religion has played in the modern age. i got an F because my teacher was ultra close minded.he said that by talking to this guy i showed that i was not being serious about the assignment.

I live a block from where this guy usually sits and I go to work at 4am. He's always parked right there, so either he starts his jesus days early, or he does live in the van.

Repentoner - what was the interview like? Did he wear the hat?

He's gotta be living in that van. I see it every time I'm in the area, and it never seems to move. It's suspiciously clean for a lived in vehicle.

well.the interview was really not much.he didnt want to answer any questions and after a lot of trying to explain it was for school i had to trick him into answering things.he just wanted to read out of his bible. he said it had " all the answers i would ever need" which was a prettu good, typical religious freak response.i wanst really pleased with the end result.

also.im assuming you know who i am.

    5. Marshall Astor - Food Fetishist 83 months ago | reply

      You assume correctly.

I think I'm going to have to try and talk with the guy next time I see him.

Hah. I see that guy everyday also. He use to have an older beet up van that he was living in, occasionally I would see it parked near my house over night. All of a sudden he had this new van, I asume someone gave it to him. That is funny that he wouldn't give you a good interview, although not surprising.
I wonder if he has gotten any converts...

There was this bag lady who was his adversary. Though they both claim Jesus as their lord and savior, his Jesus is different from hers or so she said. She has no van but rather dresses up as Holly Hobby meets Strawberry Shortcake. I never see her around anymore so maybe he has driven her off with his evil, hateful stare.

He doesn't like me much either although I've never bothered him at all.

That old lady, was she the super-rich old lady who used to hang out near the Vons in Riviera Village? There used to be (she died) this millionaire bag lady who was totally crazy, after her husband died, who was all over that place.

The lady I talked to .....that was about six months ago. I videotaped her and she talked about Jesus. Some hawaiin guy came out of nowhere and acted like her guardian, feilding questions.

I told him that I worked for videolog with Huell Howser.

Jesus man is NOT a BEAUTIFUL SOUL..nor a good example of a beautiful spirit or so called "Christian". He is VERY CREEPY. I gracioulsy asked him to pray for a young man who had experienced an accident. He questioned me...asked if the young man was carrying a bible....and I swear the Jesus man has the most EVIL VIBE! Do not celebrate this mean spirited human being. He is NOT COOL!! STAY AWAY FROM HIM!

      "Evil....mean spirited" ???
Perhaps you should re-evaluate your feeling towards this guy. Can you not see that he is obviously a paranoid schizophrenic; I seriously doubt he has the capacity to make sane or rational decisions.

And for the record, we are not celebrating him more than we are laughing at him. I suppose you missed that too.

I say hello to him when I am heading to Trader Joes. Seems friendly, but would probably not invite him over for dinner. Whatever. You have to stand for something, or you will fall for anything.

His name is Robert and I usually talk to him once a week because I'm a TJ's regular. He's only ever asked me for a "blessing" twice, so he does get along asking for money once in awhile. Interesting facts:

      1. He buys a new Bible from The Salvation Army 3 times a week.
      2. He only eats bland food
      3. He certainly lives in his van
      4. He thinks cops are evil (and out to get him)
      5. He thinks churches are evil (I agree)
      6. He can always find a way to work Jesus into any conversation
      7. He spends most of his money on decorating that "billboard for the lord" (his van)
      8. He will give you a blessing if he likes you (but not a monetary one because money is evil, unless he needs it).
      9. He has his own MySpace page (which someone else undoubtedly made for him).

I'll admit, he is a bit creepy and always wears super huge shirts for some reason. I consider myself a spiritual person so enjoy having debates about god with him. When I stump him, he just points to the bible and finds some weird passage randomly to "prove" his points. He's surely a bit delusional, but seems mostly harmless. Every once in awhile he'll let loose with what he was up to before god saved him and it sounds like being the Jesus guy is a hell of a lot better.

wonder what he was like prior to finding jesus. I remember when he didn't have a van at all, but just rode around on a little heavily decorated bike.

i distrust him a bit though, he pushed an openly gay co-worker into the street once. not very christ-like.

    18. Marshall Astor - Food Fetishist 54 months ago | reply

I think he still has the bike. I saw him riding a bike recently.

Apart from the ongoing debate here, I think this is a very good photograph. Thanks for the ccl; I've blogged it here: epages.wordpress.com/2012/06/23/will-the-real-jesus-pleas...

I waved to this guy once. He smiled really big and waved back to me, which suprised me. I've never approached the guy though.
